Online classifieds are an incredible way to find deals β but they also attract fraudsters looking to exploit trusting buyers and sellers. Here's how to stay one step ahead.
The top 4 scams on classifieds platforms
1. The "OTP verification" scam
A buyer calls and says they need to "verify your listing" or "process a refund" and asks you to share an OTP sent to your phone. Never share OTPs. That code gives them access to your bank account or UPI wallet. Becchh will NEVER call you and ask for an OTP.
2. The fake payment screenshot
A buyer sends a screenshot showing they've transferred money, but the transfer never actually arrived. Always check your bank or UPI app directly β never trust a screenshot before releasing the item.
3. The "too good to be true" listing
A brand-new iPhone listed for βΉ8,000. A car for βΉ50,000. A flat in South Mumbai for βΉ5,000/month. These listings exist purely to collect "advance bookings" or "token amounts" from gullible buyers. If the price seems impossibly good, it almost certainly is.
4. Shipping fraud
A "buyer" from another city asks you to ship first and promises to pay on delivery. They disappear after receiving the item. Only accept payment before shipping if you're dealing with a trusted courier service and a verifiable buyer.
Red flags to watch for
- Urgent pressure: "I'll send extra if you confirm now" or "I have 10 other buyers"
- Requests to move the conversation off Becchh to WhatsApp or email
- Requests for advance payment before showing the item
- Unusually high offers to "cover courier charges"
- Grammar and spelling errors in a suspiciously generic message
